Stars are something which a number of people are fascinated about. While most people are satisfied by just gazing at the sky every once in a while, a number of people decide to take the matters further. If you are one of them, here is a guide to astronomy for beginners like you.
The very first thing that you must know about in astronomy is of course equipment. If you want to start from the very beginning, all you need is a star chart and of course a clear sky to gaze at. The sky charts can be easily purchased online, there are a number of sources to procure these charts.
In case you are an absolute beginner, some of the star charts would look rather confusing. It is advised that you should look for the simplest chart that you can find. If you are not able to find a chart anywhere, you should look for astronomy magazines. They carry basic level star charts and in most cases, some information about reading them as well. Moreover, these magazines would also be carrying information about any special event you can witness.
The next thing that you would need is of course a clear night. Depending upon where you live, you can find clear night sky at different parts of a year. The best bet is to do it in summer. Summer nights are usually very clear and perfect for star gazing. If you are in an urban area, try to move to a rural area as the night lights would not cause much problem, nor would the smog caused by air pollution.
The next thing that you should want to graduate on to is telescope. Since you are a beginner, there is no need to go for advanced telescopic units with high levels of magnification. At this level, they would be an overkill. Moreover, these devices are very complicated, you would want to divert more time to actual astronomy instead of trying to sort out how the telescope works.
You would be able to procure a basic telescope for anything less than a thousand dollars. The telescope would be simple and practical enough for you to last for two to three years. After this, you might want to graduate to an advanced level telescopic device. Brass telescopes deserve a particular reference here because they are rather sturdy.
After you are done with all this, you are ready to go star gazing. Only keep two things in mind. Make sure that you carry warm clothes with you and do not stay up for too long lest you miss your next day's assignments. Astronomy for beginners can be attractive and addictive. You must proceed in a proper step by step manner.
